German magazine Focus Online reports how several leading figures of the CDU (Christian Democratic Union), one of the two biggest parliamentary groups of the current government, endorse Schäuble’s plans for stricter, more fascist, anti-terror legislation.

Following in the footsteps of Schäuble

Chief Minister Roland Koch (CDU) (Official homepage) of Hessen is being quoted saying that “Germany can’t be allowed to be not as good as other countries when it comes to investigating terrorist suspects.”
Furthermore, “The Big Coalition (CDU/SPD) has to give the idea some serious thought.”

If needed the constitution has to be enhanced to allow us to fight terrorism better.

Günther Oettinger (CDU) (Official homepage), Chief Minister of Baden-Württemberg, is said to claim “Schäuble’s advances are totally OK. If needed the constitution has to be enhanced to allow us to fight terrorism better. SPD Chief Kurt Beck (Official homepage) should be more open for compromises regarding this issue.”

Peter Müller (CDU) (Short bio), Chief Minister of Saarland, thinks what Schäuble suggested are “Ideas heading into the right direction.” International terrorism is a severe threat. “Germany is not an island of bliss.”

Opposing points of view from CSU and the police

Surprisingly, Bavarian Minister of the Interior Günther Beckstein (CSU) distanced himself from Schäuble’s latest ideas to allow “Target Killings” of terrorist suspects. He’s quoted saying: “As a general rule, this can’t be allowed, even as a general rule in case of terrorism.” He emphasized that even while fighting terrorism, the basis of our constitution can’t be touched. This comes especially surprising, since usually CSU (Christian Social Union, only active in Bavaria) is regarded as one of the most conservative political parties in Germany following most steps CDU is taking.

A diversion strategy in case something really happens.

While everyone on political level seems to be busy being either pro-fascist or pro-constitution, the chairman of the Trade Union of the Police (Gewerkschaft der Polizei (GdP)), Konrad Freiberg, says Schäuble’s utterances are nothing but “a diversion strategy in case something really happens.”
Pretty much like “Well, I did make proposals.”
The reason he sees behind it, is Schäuble’s attempt to diverting from all the stuff he didn’t take care of, like better equipment for the police, be it financially or personnel-wise.
He states that the police don’t even have the capacities to have the approximately 100 “jeopardizers” under surveillance 24/7.
