The SATA driver of my 2.6.23-gentoo kernel was ticking me off for some time now.
At some point in time, more or less random, it decided to start resetting ports.
Note: It’s not very nice if it resets the port your main harddrive is connected to…

The Problem

Ever found something like this in your syslog ?

Well, I have, TONS of it.
Read on to see how I fixed it.

Who thought that the days of the command line have been counted, might be wrong.

In the days of iPhones pooping popping up on every website and impressing the crowd with an unique user interface, Alex Faaborg, who recently joined Mozilla as User Experience Designer, wrote some interesting things about it on the mozilla blog.
I use the Mac application Quicksilver myself a lot – the combination of command line (or as geeks refer to as “CLI” – go and look it up yourself) and GUI is the most powerfull I’ve experienced so far for the shorter commands. For longer commands I tend to go back to the terminal (started with quicksilver of course).

Hab eben mal wieder die homepage der c-base besucht und dabei festgestellt, dass es eine offizielle Pressemitteilung gibt. Ich werde sie unten einfach übernehmen, wie hadez es schon gemacht hat. Für die, die sie später lesen wollen, gibt es denselben Text auch als PDF.

Berliner Kulturprojekt c-base vor dem Aus – auch die Raumstation Mitte wird Opfer fehlender Kulturförderung und der Mietpreisentwicklung.

Seit fast 12 Jahren besteht die Raumstation Mitte an der Jannowitzbrücke. Sie war und ist Magnet für unterschiedlichste Projekte aus dem Bereichen Gesellschaft, Kunst und Kommunikation. Hier treffen sich Go-Spieler, Comic-Zeichner, Musiker, 3D-Designer und Jugger (futuristische Rugbyspieler). Von der Piratenpartei über den Wikipedia Stammtisch bis hin zum Freifunk-NET. Das Raumschiff bietet vielen Aktivitäten eine Heimat, die die Off-Kultur Berlins prägen. Das alles droht nun wieder im Nichts zu verschwinden und damit ein weiteres Loch in der Kulturlandschaft im Zentrum zu hinterlassen.

well, while i was writing all kinds of crap on the blackboard this morning during pattern recognition class at university it suddenly struck me.
it made me laugh while still standing in front of the blackboard.

doing laundry here in the states is pretty straight forward.
here’s a geeks-guide-to-laundry

what you need: – clothes (preferably dirty and huge amounts) – soap – a laundromat – time – quarters

what you do: – sort clothes (whites, colors. huh? uhhmmm, no….) – put soap in washer – put clothes in washer – throw in some quarters – select mode (pretty easy, there’s only 3: cold, medium, and kill) – wait 15 minutes – remove clothes from washer – put clothes in dryer – throw in some quarters – select mode (also pretty easy, there’s only 3: cold, medium, and kill) – wait a little longer, 30 to 40 minutes did the trick for me – remove clothes from dryer – fold ‘n stack – leave

optional steps: – ironing

what you get: – clean clothes

pretty easy, eh.
and if you’re wondering what to do while waiting:
at the laundromat i went to you could choose between a flipper, an arcade, some other game thingy, vending machines for sodas and snacks, etc.

but you can always just stare at your clothes in the dryer going wheeeeeeeeeeeeee

nein, keine angst, ich bin zwar vergesslich, aber dann doch noch nicht in diesem ausmasse.

als ich mittwoch morgen an die workstation wollte, wollte diese nicht.
kein booten, nichts, null, schwarze monitore.

nach dem verlust von magi, meinem treuen server gefaehrten, RIP, trifft mich der zweite verlust umso haerter.
vor allem einen tag vor abgabe eines papers und einer praesentation und zwei tage vor einer haesslichen programmieraufgabe.
nach zwei tagen forschen und diversen hardware steckereien und bios resets sprach mein rechner mit mir, im wahrsten sinne des wortes (danke asus), “memory error”. huh.

die iterative trial and error loesung ergab: ein riegel im arsch.

kein problem… ist ja nur ein gigabyte corsair cl2 ddr ram…..

und da waehren wir wieder beim thema, digitaler alzheimer, speicherverlust.
lang lebe die garantie!

The party was, once again, pretty awesome.
Harald Welte’s talk on the EZX Linux smart phones was hilarious.
The talk on botnet honey pots was both, interesting and shocking, i wouldn’t have guessed it was that extreme with such a large number of different worms in the wild.

Too bad i didn’t attend the talk on Windows Vista security, it turned out to be more than worth listening to.

Anyways, for the first time we were able to enjoy free dead animal pieces off the grill on Friday evening and a nice buffet on Saturday and Sunday.
